July Is Minority Mental Health Month
July is Minority Mental Health Month. I wrote a blog piece a while back. It is an interview with a young lady named Ashleigh Scipio who shared her thoughts about mental health.
Asleigh talked about being a Christian and the stigma about mental health. Ashleigh and I have similar thoughts on mental wellness and one thing she said about mental health that stuck with me is: “It’s not just a demon to be prayed away, or a cry for attention. It’s a serious imbalance or illness that deserves attention and treatment.”
I am all for praying, heck I have prayed myself through some stuff but I also know the IMPORTANCE that therapy can bring to healing as well. I have had the talk at nauseum with some folks who truly believe that prayer is the only way to get mental health help. I want people to know that seeking therapy does in no way mean you are less of a Chrisitian. Lets normalize folks being able to talk about their mental health struggles and helping them get the help needed to get better.
If you or someone you know is in need of mental health resources please check out NAMI.
You matter and help is available. Let's work to stop the stigma surrounding mental health.
